Xpress, the Coolest Section of the St. Petersburg Times, is the home for features, news and views of interest to young readers. Most of the work in Xpress, which appears on Mondays in Floridian, is produced by the Times' X-Team. The team of journalists ages 9-17 from around the Tampa Bay area is selected every year at the end of the school year to serve during the following school term. The current team of 12 was chosen out of 150 applicants. Watch for X-Team application forms in Xpress during the month of May.

MTV rolls out red carpet

It's the one awards show you won't want to miss. From the funky fashion to the phat music, there's always something outrageous going on at the MTV Video Music Awards. This year's host is actor-comedian Jamie Foxx. The ceremony airs live Thursday at 8 p.m. 'N Sync and Missy Elliott are scheduled to perform.

A new Elle, just for teens

The new Ellegirl magazine is aimed at readers 14 to 17 years old. Like its counterpart, Elle, the teen version of the mag is heavy on beauty and fashion stories. The premiere issue is on newsstands now.

The goods on grandparents

Before Grandparents' Day rolls around this Sunday, you might want to check out the new book Dr. Ruth Talks About Grandparents (Madison Books, $15.95). Chapter titles include "When Grandparents Live Far Away," "Divorce and Grandparents" and "Grandparents and Computers."

Good tunes from toons

Two new CDs from the Kid Rhino label are jam-packed with cartoon music. Toon Tunes: Action-Packed Anthems includes tracks from TV shows such as X-Men, The Powerpuff Girls and Scooby-Doo. Toon Tunes: Funny Bone Favorites offers music from funny shows including Dexter's Laboratory, Rugrats and Johnny Bravo. The CDs sell for $17.98 in stores and online at www.kidrhino.com.

A cookbook for kids

When Timmy Denning of New Jersey was 14 (he's 17 now), he collected recipes and created a cookbook for kids. The Kids' No-Cook Cookbook includes kid-friendly recipes for dishes such as crunchy tuna, apple nutty chicken and minicheesecakes. To order, make checks payable to The Kids' No-Cook Cookbook for $12.45 and send to P.O. Box 167, Green Village, NJ 07935. The book is not available in bookstores or online.
