UCLA attack overpowers UF

GAINESVILLE -- The statistics were similar. The score was almost the same. The outcome for Florida's women was different.

After handing South Florida a 5-0 defeat on Friday, the Gators lost to UCLA 4-0 Sunday afternoon.

"We need to do a better job of picking our mark and staying with our mark," Florida goalkeeper Jordan Kellgren said. "We need to come out here and give all we can. We need to give 110 percent. It was more than people not giving all they can, but that's a part of it." It was Florida's 10th shutout and its worst loss at Percy Beard Stadium.

UCLA (3-1) had three goals by the 29th minute.

Forward Sarah-Gayle Swanson scored first with a 4-yard header in the sixth minute. A 6-yard header from midfielder Venus James scored in the 17th minute.

Shortly after coming in off the bench, forward Stephanie Rigmat put in UCLA's third goal with a 10-yard header.

The Bruins' final goal came when Swanson put in a 2-yard volley from a corner kick at the beginning of the second half.

"I had a lot of frustration out there," said Gator forward Abby Wambach, who had one shot. "I knew that wasn't University of Florida soccer. We just weren't coming out on the same page." UCLA coach Jillian Ellis said she was surprised by the number of goals: "We knew this was going to be one of our toughest games. I knew it was going to be physical and hard."

Kellgren had seven saves, tied for fifth-most all-time at UF.

The Gators allowed 18 shots.

"Jordan was a sitting duck out there," coach Becky Burleigh said. "None of those goals were her fault."

Florida was playing without starter Danielle Rust, who tore her left anterior cruciate ligament Friday. Rust will be out the rest of the season. Also, forward Crystal Frimpong and defender Casey Hamel were out with concussions and forward Kelley Visentin did not play because of a sprained right ankle. Midfielder/defender Danielle Murphy has missed all four games because of a suspension.
