FLORAL CITY -- A young boy fell into a canal and drowned Sunday afternoon. Kevin Bernauer, 2, was playing in the back yard shortly before 1 p.m. Sunday when the accident occurred. According to the Citrus County Sheriff's Office, Kevin was left unattended briefly, and when his mother returned from inside the house on E Crow Lane off S Withlapopka Drive, the boy was missing. The Sheriff's Office would not release the mother's name Sunday afternoon. The mother and neighbors searched the area and called the Sheriff's Office. By the time deputies arrived, an airboater found the boy's body about 10 feet from shore in the canal that runs behind his home. Deputies performed CPR on the boy until an ambulance arrived. Kevin was taken to Citrus Memorial Hospital in Inverness where he was pronounced dead at 2:24 p.m.
