© St. Petersburg Times, Deputies to check for seat beltsThe Hernando County Sheriff's Office will participate in the ninth "enforcement wave" for Buckle Up Florida, through Sunday. The goal is to prevent traffic accident injuries and death by supporting strict enforcement of the Florida safety belt and child restraint laws. During the campaign, deputies will show zero tolerance for safety belt law violations. Drivers pulled over for another violation and not buckled up will be given a citation. Florida safety belt laws require all front seat passengers to wear seat belts, regardless of age. Children younger than 6 must be properly restrained as follows: Newborns through age 3 must be in safety seats, and ages 4 and 5 in a child safety seat or safety belt. Drivers are held responsible for passengers younger than 18 who are not buckled. Also, deputies will be performing vehicle checks in connection with Buckle Up Florida at the following Hernando County locations: Elgin Boulevard, Sealawn Drive, Bay Drive, Waterfall Drive, Coronado Drive, Fort Dade Avenue, Ayers Road, Hayman Road, Ridge Manor Boulevard, Powell Road and Dempsey Road.
