USF suspends freshman who was charged with weapon possession

TAMPA -- South Florida redshirt freshman defensive back Antonio Warren was suspended indefinitely after his arrest last weekend.

Warren, 20, who played on special teams in the opener Thursday against Northern Illinois, was charged with possession of a weapon -- a box cutter -- on school grounds, a third-degree felony.

According to a police report, there was a scuffle on campus late Saturday but Warren was not present. One of the people involved phoned Warren to come over, and when police arrived, Warren was holding a box cutter in his right hand and was arrested. He was released Sunday afternoon on $2,500 bail.

"He is suspended indefinitely until this thing's cleared up," coach Jim Leavitt said. "Antonio told me a friend of his had gotten into an argument, and he went down to break it up. His friend had the box cutter. Antonio grabbed it out of his hand because he didn't want any harm to be done and he went and gave it to the police. When he gave it to the police, they handcuffed him.

"That's the story I have, and I believe it. Probably same thing I would have done. Take the thing out of his hand, go give it to the police."

"That's exactly what happened," Warren said Monday night.

Leavitt and Warren said they did not know when Warren would have a court date.

MAKING CHANGES: Leavitt said freshman Brian Fisher has supplanted senior Hugh Smith as a starting wide receiver. Smith had a dropped pass in the 20-17 loss to Northern Illinois and missed another catchable ball. Fisher had his first career reception in the game. Senior defensive end Tchecoy Blount, declared academically eligible after the Northern Illinois game, is expected to play extensively at defensive tackle Saturday at Pittsburgh, Leavitt said. -- PETE YOUNG

Game doesn't thrill La.-Monroe coach

GAINESVILLE -- Florida coach Steve Spurrier said he doesn't need to make excuses for having Louisiana-Monroe on the schedule. Indians coach Bobby Keasler feels a little differently.

Keasler is beginning his third season at the Sun Belt Conference school with an enrollment of 11,000 in northeast Louisiana. He said the Indians are in the midst of a major rebuilding effort and, frankly, playing UF on Saturday is not what they need right now.

"To play Florida, I would like to have them on the schedule maybe two or three years from now," Keasler said Monday. "I think we'll be a little more solid scholarship-wise and depth-wise."

UF defeated Louisiana-Monroe 42-10 in 1998, prior to Keasler's arrival.

POSITION CHANGE: Defensive tackle Bryan Savelio is spending part of the week practicing at nose tackle. "I'm playing nose or tackle this week because Arpedge (Rolle's) leg is bothering him," Savelio said. Z IS FIRST: Fifth-year senior center Zac Zedalis has moved to first on the depth chart and is scheduled to start Saturday. Receiver Ward returns to practice

TALLAHASSEE -- Freshman safety B.J. Ward practiced with the wide receivers to add depth to the position depleted by injuries.

Ward, a 6-3, 205-pounder, spent practice learning the offense. He did not run pass routes.

"I'm picking it up slowly but surely," he said. "It'll be a matter of time, but I'm just learning the basic plays right now."

Ward is listed as the fourth-team safety, but he is not expected to see playing time this season at the position.

SOME AVERAGE: Junior running back Nick Maddox described his 146 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns in Saturday's 55-14 victory against Duke as "average" and said he needs to improve his stamina if he hopes to be a big-time playmaker.

"If your mind doesn't think you're tired, then you're not tired," he said. "I need to get more mentally prepared to carry that load if that's what I want to do. It's all a mental thing."

SOAKED: Rain forced practice indoors. The team spent two hours working on conditioning drills and running through scout-team scenarios. -- ALEX ABRAMS
