Golf tourney to benefit city housing services

ST. PETERSBURG -- A $20,000 hole-in-one prize is one of the features in a Sept. 14 golf tournament at Mangrove Bay to benefit the St. Petersburg Neighborhood Housing Services.

A 1 p.m. shotgun start follows the 12:30 p.m. registration, with dinner, awards and prizes scheduled immediately after the tournament. Entry fee is $75 for individual golfers, $300 for a four-player team. Sponsorships from $150 to $3,500 also are available.

Prizes also will be awarded for the day's longest drive and the closest-to-the-pin shot.

Neighborhood Housing Services provides financial, educational and technical help to first-time homebuyers.

The Suncoast Safety Council now offers its traffic school on the Worldwide Web, for Florida residents with a moving violation who wish to prevent having points placed on their license. The four-hour course costs $35. Call 373-7233, ext. O, for more information or to register.

Nursing home residents need ombudsmen

The Long-Term Care Ombudsman Councils of the Tampa Bay area seek volunteers to serve as advocates to residents of nursing homes and assisted living facilities, in order to investigate and resolve resident complaints.

Volunteer responsibilities may include periodic inspection of facilities, and travel expenses to and from facilities will be reimbursed.

Prospective ombudsmen should be free from a conflict of interest and will be interviewed before selection by local council members. The councils are also seeking specialized volunteers such as licensed pharmacists and social workers, elder law attorneys and registered dietitians.

City of St. Petersburg offers water info line

Unsure of when to water? The city of St. Petersburg has set up an official phone line to answer questions about potable, well and reclaimed water restrictions. The information will be updated as guidelines change. Call 892-5300.

Mental health, aging coalition hosts conference

"Facing the Future," the fourth annual conference hosted by the Florida Coalition for Optimal Mental Health and Aging, will be held Oct. 25-26 at the Travelodge Hotel, 820 E. Busch Blvd., Tampa.

The two-day event will focus on care and intervention plans regarding aging, mental health and substance abuse issues. The conference is targeted toward nurses, senior caregivers, therapists and mental health counselors, nursing home administrators, social workers and others in the field, but is also open to anyone interested in quality elder care.

Continuing education credits and certificates of attendance will be offered. The coalition is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the mental health and substance abuse services for Florida seniors.

Documentary to feature Webb's City memories

ST. PETERSBURG -- The St. Petersburg Museum of History, in conjunction with the LiveArts Peninsula Foundation, is looking for people to share their memories of Webb's City and its founder, J.E. "Doc" Webb. The stories will be included in a documentary about "The World's Most Unusual Drugstore."

Interviews will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the museum, 335 Second Ave. NE, St. Petersburg. The interviews will be taped and those who are selected will be called back for an additional taping day. Interviews not selected will be preserved in the museum's archival library and will be made available to the public.

Produce vendors needed for harvest and market

Pinellas Pioneer Settlement needs produce, plant and honey vendors for its very first Autumn Harvest and Farmer's Market, scheduled for Oct. 20. The Pioneer Settlement has as permanent exhibits a blacksmith shop, a print shop, sawmill and a completely furnished 19th century house

Job fair for disabled scheduled Sept. 20

Abilities Workforce Services and Suncoast Human Resources Association will be joint hosts for a job fair to be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Sept. 20. The event, which will place special emphasis on employment opportunities for people with disabilities, will be held at the holiday Inn Select, 3535 Ulmerton Road in Clearwater. Admission is free. Monte Carlo Night to benefit homeless families

The Fourth Annual Brighter Day Monte Carlo Night, which will benefit homeless families with children, will be held from 7 to 11 p.m. Sept. 14. The event will be held at the St. Petersburg Suncoast Board of Realtors, 7655 38th Ave. N, St. Petersburg.

Casino games, such as black jack, roulette, Caribbean stud and craps, will be available for play. Live music will be provided by Terry Palone and the Alley Cats. Food and prizes round up the promised activities for a fun-filled evening.

Group seeks volunteers to care for golden retrievers

Golden Retriever Rescue of Mid-Florida Inc., a non-profit organization that provides homes for homeless golden retrievers, seeks volunteers to care for the dogs until they are adopted. The fostering period may last from a few days to several weeks, and duties will include feeding, cleaning, socializing and medicating, if necessary. Vendors needed for craft show

The VA Bay Pines Hospital Employee Recreation Organization (HERO) seeks crafters and other vendors for their fourth annual charity craft fair to be held at the hospital, 10000 Bay Pines Blvd., St. Petersburg, on Oct. 27. Consumer education and protection is available

The Pinellas County Department of Consumer Protection wants Floridians to be aware of their rights in canceling contracts with service providers and solicitors.

Under Florida state law, the purchaser has the right to cancel many signed contracts within three days of signing. Services to be rendered in the future, such as gym memberships or dance lessons, and home solicitations amounting to $25 or more, are covered under the statute. New and used car sales are excluded. To cancel a contract, the buyer should send a certified letter to the seller within three business days of signing the contract.

Asian center offers GED, English classes

The Asian Family and Community Empowerment Center offers classes for general equivalency diploma preparation at 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, English for speakers of other languages at 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, and citizenship preparation at 5 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays at the center, 2201 First Ave. N, St. Petersburg. Vendors needed for church craft show

St. Paul United Methodist Church seeks artists and craftspersons to display their wares at the church's sixth annual craft show, "Homespun by Hands and Hearts," to be held Oct. 20 at the church's Christian Life Enrichment Center, 1199 Highland Ave., Largo. Walk to benefit polycystic kidney disease research

The Suncoast Friends Chapter of the Polycystic Kidney Disease Foundation will sponsor a "Walk for PKD" at 9 a.m. Saturday at Fort De Soto Park, 3500 Pinellas Bayway S, Tierra Verde. Registration begins at 8 a.m. All proceeds will benefit PKD research programs. Polycystic kidney disease is a genetic, life-threatening disease that affects more than 600,000 Americans and an estimated 12.5-million people worldwide. Deaf Service Center offers new services

Friends of the Deaf Service Center in Pinellas County now offers complete Florida Telecommunications Relay services to local residents who are deaf, hard of hearing, deaf/blind or speech impaired. Specialized telephones and ring-signaling devices are available free of charge, and the equipment will be loaned to qualified residents for as long as needed. For more information, call 399-9983.
