© St. Petersburg Times, NORTH OAK CHRISTIAN SCHOOL: North Oak Christian School is accepting applications for the prek-3 and k-4 kindergarten classes. The school uses ABEKA as part of the curriculum and other materials to meet the academic and social needs of the children. Registration is $55 and monthly tuition is $146. CLASS "D,' PRIVATE UNARMED SECURITY GUARD CLASS: Withlacoochee Technical Institute is accepting registrations for the Class "D" Private Unarmed Security Guard Class, which will be held on two consecutive weekends: this Friday, Saturday and Sunday and Sept. 14, 15 and 16. Class will meet from 6 to 10 p.m. on Friday and 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday in Room 261. Attendance is required on all six days and tuition is $62, paid at the time of registration, which will continue until the class is filled. For information, call 726-2430, ext. 234. NON-CREDIT CLASSES: Withlacoochee Technical Institute is now registering for fall part-time non-credit classes from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday. FOOD MANAGER'S TRAINING AND EXAM: The University of Florida Citrus County Extension Office will offer the ServSafe Food Manager's Training and Exam from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Sept 19 at the extension office in Inverness. The training and exam can enable food managers to receive national certification, as required in Florida for food managers of all establishments licensed by the Department of Business and Professional Regulation and selected licensees of the Department of Health. The cost is $90 for the training, exam and manual. Registration is required by Sept. 13. Call the UF Food Safety and Quality Program at (888) 232-8723 to register. IAPA SCHOLARSHIP: The Inter American Press Association Scholarship Fund's application period for the $13,000 U.S. scholarships is open. Deadline is Dec. 31. Senior journalism students and U.S. or Canadian journalists interested in studying in or reporting from Latin America may apply. Recipients will be selected at the IAPA Midyear Meeting in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, in March. "TIMES' SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM -- 2002: The St. Petersburg Times is offering four scholarships of up to $15,000 annually to public or private high school seniors in Citrus, Hernando, Pasco and Pinellas counties. Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States, and preference will be given to students whose parents did not graduate from a four-year accredited college or university. Applications are available at all St. Petersburg Times offices during regular business hours, from high school guidance counselors, at some community centers and online at www.sptimes.com. SPANISH AND FRENCH CLASSES: Withlacoochee Technical Institute will offer Spanish and French classes as part of the fall evening program. Beginning Spanish will start at 6 p.m. Monday in Room 710. Intermediate Spanish will begin at 6 p.m. Sept. 11 in Room 710. Tuition for each 12-week class is $72 (books not included). Beginning and intermediate French will start at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 13 in Room 710. Tuition is $66 (books not included). CRPS ENHANCEMENT COUNCIL: Crystal River Primary School has openings for parents and community members on the School Advisory Enhancement Council. FREE/REDUCED PRICE MEALS: Several area preschools announce their participation in the U.S. Department of Agriculture's child care food program. Meals are available to eligible children at the preschool without regard to race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability. Parents or guardians of eligible children must complete applications. TEACHER APPRECIATION AT MOSI: The Museum Of Science and Industry invites teachers, educators and their families to a Teacher Appreciation Event from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday The event is free for educators with a $2 charge per family member per film in the IMAX Dome Theatre. MOSI educators will show teachers how to integrate the museum's programs into the curriculum, providing step-by-step instructions on selecting and scheduling the programs that best fit their educational needs. Films that will be showing that day include Journey into Amazing Caves, Amazing Journeys andShackleton's Antarctic Adventure. Everyone will get a sneak peek at clips from Disney's Beauty and the Beast film on the giant screen and a short presentation on the accompanying educational materials. Youth Media International, in cooperation with Walt Disney Pictures, provides the curriculum resource guide that emphasizes science and technology but also includes activities in history, social studies, anthropology, environmental studies, language arts, biology and math. During the event, educators may preview educational programs in the Coleman Science Works Theater, Verizon Challenger Learning Center, the Saunders Planetarium and the Duckwall Foundation Lab Zone. Interactive demonstrations will take place in all of the exhibit galleries. Guests are eligible for prize drawings and giveaways, and there will be food specials in the MOSI Cafe and discounts in the Science Store. There will also be a book fair from 1 to 6 p.m. where teachers can receive half price on all Hotshot Books and buy five books and get one free.
