Things are picking up. The week of Sept. 9-15 starts right off with two government sanctioned holidays. The first Sunday after Labor Day, which this year is Sept. 9, is Carl Garner Federal Lands Cleanup Day and is also National Grandparents Day. These are perpetual one day commemorative observances.

Another government sanctioned observance is National Hispanic Heritage Month, which begins Sept. 15 and runs through October 15 each year.

Now for the unofficial holidays developed by companies or organizations to promote awareness of, well, whatever: Sunday is Teddy Bear Day, Monday is Swap Ideas Day, Tuesday is Make Your Bed Day (do we have to?), Wednesday is National Chocolate Milk Shake Day (hhmmmm, sounds good), Thursday is National Peanut Day and Positive Thinking Day and Saturday is Make a Hat Day.
