Heavy guitars, heavy lyrics

From Northern California, Papa Roach brings its metal with hip hop flourishes -- that is, singer Coby Dick sort of raps instead of sings over those oh-so-Sabbathy riffs -- to the Masquerade, 1503 E Seventh Ave., Ybor City, Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. (Whoa! That's a school night!) See what the MTV-viewing tattooed teens are raving about as Papa Roach churns out the heavy guitars and heavy lyrics that make its debut disc Infest infectious. Taproot and HEDpe open the show. Tickets are $12. (813) 247-3319.

Gainesville's Hot Water Music gets stuck in the "emo" genre because it plays intense, guitar-driven post-punk with the requisite lead singer wailing poetry from the bottom of his heart. Sigh. It's been a year since the quartet released its last full-length disc, No Division, but the boys have been touring up a storm. This summer, Hot Water Music goofed around with the Vans Warped Tour 2000. See 'em at 8 p.m. Friday at the State Theater, 687 Central Ave., St. Petersburg, with slightly less sweat and testosterone. With guests Leatherface, Pezz and River City High. Tickets are $8. (727) 895-3045.
