Injured Cone expected to skip just one turn

BOSTON -- The New York Yankees got good news about David Cone: Manager Joe Torre expects the injured pitcher to return to the rotation Friday after missing one start.

Cone's range of motion in his left shoulder was improved, Torre said before Friday night's game against the Red Sox. Cone separated the shoulder Tuesday diving for a popped-up bunt in Kansas City.

"It's great news for Conie, for sure, and us, too," Torre said of the report from team physician Stuart Hershon.

Centerfielder Bernie Williams missed his fourth straight game with a strained right rib cage muscle and Torre said Williams probably wouldn't play this weekend.

The Yankees, meanwhile, announced they intend to form a television network next season and value their broadcasting rights at about $1.4-billion over the next 10 years. Madison Square Garden Network holds TV rights under a $486-million, 12-year contract that expires after this season.

STRIPTEASE INTERRUPTS GAME: A man ran onto the field at Wrigley Field in the seventh inning, stripped, stood on the mound and made an obscene gesture.

The Cubs' Eric Young had singled to lead off the inning when James Short, 43, of Deerfield, Ill., ran onto the field from near the visiting team's dugout. He stopped shy of the mound, took off his shorts and shirt and stood on the mound.

Chicago's Ricky Gutierrez, who was at the plate, laughed with several other players.

Short was charged with criminal trespass and indecent exposure, a Chicago police spokesman said.

PITCHERS SUSPENDED: Dodgers pitcher Ismael Valdes was suspended for six games and Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood for three for throwing at batters Aug. 27. Both also were fined by Frank Robinson, baseball's head of on-field discipline.

GARVEY STUNNED BY SUIT: Steve Garvey expressed shock at being sued by the Federal Trade Commission for hosting a diet drug advertisement that federal regulators contend was deceptive. The suit, filed last month, builds on an April suit that alleged Enforma Natural Products Inc. and two of its principals, Andrew Grey and Fred Zinos, made false claims about "The Enforma System." "To my knowledge, this would represent a precedent in that a host is being asked to bear financial responsibility for a product he endorses, and that he has found to work," Garvey said in a statement.

CARDINALS: Mark McGwire was back in the lineup, though for only one at-bat. McGwire, batting second and listed as the second baseman, took a called third strike from Milwaukee's Jeff D'Amico in the first inning, then left the game. Manager Tony La Russa wanted McGwire, activated from the disabled list before the game, to get a taste of live pitching.

MARLINS: John Boles signed a one-year extension to remain manager through the 2002 season.

REDS: Shortstop Barry Larkin had arthroscopic surgery to remove cartilage fragments from his left knee and probably will miss the rest of the season.
