Senators will announce Yashin rejoining team

KANATA, Ontario -- The impasse between the Ottawa Senators and Alexei Yashin appears to be drawing to a close.

The Senators have called a news conference for 11:30 this morning to announce Yashin will return to the team.

The Russian forward and his agent, Mark Gandler, will be at the news conference along with general manager Marshall Johnston and coach Jacques Martin.

Yashin sat out the 1999-2000 season in hopes of renegotiating his contract, even though a year remained at $3.6-million.

BRUINS: The team held its annual media day, and once again most of the questions were about who wasn't there. Boston's top three scorers from last season -- Sergei Samsonov, Anson Carter and Joe Thornton -- are holding out.

DEVILS: The Stanley Cup champions began camp without three key players. Center Jason Arnott, who scored the Cup-winning goal in overtime against the Stars, and Scott Niedermayer, one of the team's top defenseman, are unsigned free agents. Also absent was forward Petr Sykora, who had his tonsils removed.

FLYERS: John LeClair has given Philadelphia a deadline of midnight Sunday to reach an agreement on his multiyear contract. The NHL's leading goal-scorer the past five seasons says he won't negotiate during the season or sign a deal during the free-agency period afterward. That means the Flyers might be forced to trade LeClair if the sides don't resolve differences this weekend.

RANGERS: Mike Mottau, winner of the Hobey Baker Award as the best U.S. collegiate player at Boston College, was the only player on the roster who failed to report.

RED WINGS: Detroit is set to open camp today minus two regulars involved in contract disputes. Forwards Slava Kozlov and Kris Draper stayed behind when they were unable to reach new agreements with the club.

WILD: Derek Gustafson and ex-Lightning goalie Zac Bierk combined for a scrimmage shutout.

INJURY PREVENTION: The NHL established a panel of players, coaches, executives and medical professionals to discuss ways to reduce serious injuries.

OILERS: Edmonton signed right wing Georges Laraque, 23, to a three-year contract. Left wing Ryan Smyth is the only Oilers player not under contract.
