Horses vaccinated for West Nile virusBy Times staff writer
© St. Petersburg Times, Pinellas County Animal Services set up a Saturday morning clinic to give vaccinations for the mosquito-borne West Nile virus at the Walsingham Equestrian Park for walk-in horses and a daylong clinic both Saturday and today at Walsingham Park for trailered horses. Both parks are on 102nd Avenue on the Largo-Seminole border. Each person with a horse was required to fill out a certificate with information about the horse and its owner. The information, to be kept in the county's database, would be used in the event of a disaster or hurricane, said Sandra Lee of Animal Services. The vaccinations cost $10, and some horses also received rabies shots. Crystal River hires city manager at lastCRYSTAL RIVER -- After months of searching, this city has found someone to take charge. On Saturday, the City Council hired its eighth city manager in 11 years, a dubious track record that scared away previous candidates and has made the city the butt of jokes statewide. The new manager, Philip Lilly, is unfazed by the city's history. "I'm more the half-full than the half-empty guy. I look at things a lot more positively," said Lilly, 52, a Federal Aviation Administration official who lives in Crystal River. Although Lilly signed a four-year deal, three council members are up for re-election in November and a faction gunning for those seats said Lilly is unqualified. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
