Give him a chance

FSU redshirt sophomore Chance Gwaltney, who last attempted a field goal in the Florida-Georgia all-star game in June 1998, hit a 21-yarder with 6:44 left in the first quarter. It was FSU's first field goal of the season. Matt Munyon missed two short field goals and an extra point in the opener but handled the kickoffs.

Hoo Rays

Tampa Bay Devil Rays left-hander Doug Creek, who recorded his first major-league save Friday, was inducted into Georgia Tech's Hall of Fame the same night. Parents Betty and Paul were introduced in a pregame ceremony because Creek couldn't attend. Creek is Tech's all-time leader in wins (41), strikeouts (458) and innings pitched (472).

Oh, no: Bobby again

The Yellow Jackets were 7-0-1 against FSU before Bobby Bowden took over the struggling program in 1976. They have lost all nine meetings since.

Venerable ground

It might not have the profile of Tennessee's Neyland Stadium or the Rose Bowl, but Georgia Tech's Bobby Dodd Stadium/Grant Field is the oldest on-campus, Division I-A facility. It was built in 1913.

Quotable

"The big thing about us in our last ballgame is we caught the ball well, but we missed ol' Peter (Warrick) breaking them for touchdowns."

-- FSU coach Bobby Bowden, who then saw junior receiver Javon Walker score on a 63-yard catch in the first quarter against Georgia Tech
