Manatee sanctuary meeting today

CRYSTAL RIVER -- The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will hold a public meeting from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Plantation Inn Conference Center. The meeting will be for public comment on the agency's plan to establish a manatee sanctuary at the Blue Waters in the Homosassa River. The service plans to create that no-entry zone by late next year unless state officials take action before then to provide more manatee protections there. State and federal officials have been sued by various environmental organizations that claim they have not done enough to protect manatees. State and federal officials say the Blue Waters needs more attention because of increasing numbers of manatees and boaters in the small area.

Join Arbor Day group, receive 10 live oak trees

Ten free live oak trees will be given to each person who joins the National Arbor Day Foundation this month. The free trees are part of the nonprofit Foundation's Trees for America campaign.

"These magnificent wide-spreading trees will be picturesque additions to your landscape," said John Rosenow, the Foundation's president. "They were selected because of the shade and special beauty they will give your home. Live oaks grow rapidly when young and may live to be centuries old."

The trees will be shipped postpaid at the right time for planting between Oct. 15 and Dec. 10 with enclosed planting instructions. The 6- to 12-inch trees are guaranteed to grow or they will be replaced free of charge.

Members also receive a subscription to the foundation's colorful bimonthly publication, Arbor Day, and the Tree Book with information about tree planting and care.

To receive the free trees, send a $10 membership contribution to Ten Live Oaks, National Arbor Day Foundation, 100 Arbor Ave., Nebraska City, NE 68410, by Sept. 30.
