Exhibitors sought for Taste of Palm Harbor

PALM HARBOR -- Organizers of the fifth annual Taste of Palm Harbor are looking for restaurants to take part in the event, which is scheduled for Oct. 7 on Florida Avenue in downtown Palm Harbor.

Last year, more than 18,000 people attended the Taste of Palm Harbor and sampled foods from more than 30 local restaurants. The GFWC Palm Harbor Junior Woman's Club sponsors the event.

Helen Ellis hospital offers health programs

TARPON SPRINGS -- Community health programs provided at Helen Ellis Memorial Hospital, 1395 S Pinellas Ave., include:

Free blood pressure checks from 9 a.m. to noon Fridays in the lobby.

A free pain support group from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the hospital's fifth-floor waiting room.

A free diabetes support group from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday in the hospital's blue room. Call (727) 943-3600 to register.

Councils seek volunteers to help elderly

The Long-Term Care Ombudsman Councils of the Tampa Bay area seek volunteers to serve as advocates to residents of nursing homes and assisted living facilities to investigate and resolve resident complaints.

Volunteer's responsibilities may include periodic inspection of facilities and travel expenses to and from facilities will be reimbursed. Prospective ombudsmen should be free from a conflict of interest and will be interviewed before selection by local council members.

The councils also are seeking specialized volunteers such as licensed pharmacists and social workers, elder law attorneys and registered dietitians.

Soup kitchens need food donations

Local food pantries and soup kitchens have food shortages during the summer months and need donations of canned and/or dry goods. Call 211, a free phone number for around-the-clock information and referral, to find a food pantry or soup kitchen in your area. The project is a public service of the Tampa Bay Regional 211 Task Force.

Breast, cervical cancer screenings available

The Pinellas County Health Department's Largo Health Center, 12420 130th Ave. N, Largo offers screening exams for breast and cervical cancer for women ages 50 to 64 who are uninsured or whose insurance doesn't fully cover such services. Pap smears, mammograms and clinical breast exams are included. Call (727) 824-6917.

Ceramics classes offered at community center

TARPON SPRINGS -- The Tarpon Springs Community Center, 400 S Walton Ave., holds ceramics and clay classes from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays. A four-week session costs $40 for city residents and $43.21 for non-residents. A fee for materials also is charged.

The center offers stained glass classes from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. A four-week session costs $75 for city residents and $78.21 for non-residents. There is also a $95 materials fee that does not include the cost of glass.
