New attacks recall 1993 Trade Center bombing©Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) - In 1993, a bombing at the World Trade Center killed six people and wounded more than 1,000. Six Islamic militants were convicted in the bombing, and sentenced to life behind bars. The Feb. 26, 1993, attack was meant to force the United States to curb its support for Israel and to stay out of the Middle East. Instead, it resulted in a heightening of security at public buildings across the country and increased attention to the threat of terrorism.
The attack displaced businesses in the 110-story twin towers for six months. It was carried out with a 1,200-pound bomb that was detonated in a parking garage beneath the twin towers.
