CHARGERS: John Carney's two field goals and three PATs gave him 1,004 career points, making him the team's first player to surpass the 1,000-point milestone. ... Linebacker Orlando Ruff had an interception and a fumble recovery in his second career start.

CHIEFS: They lost their fourth straight road opener. ... They fell to 199-168-8 against original AFL teams.

COLTS: Oakland played its first regular-season game in Indianapolis, leaving Jacksonville and Minnesota as the only teams that have not visited the RCA Dome. Both play there later this season. ... Receiver Marvin Harrison, playing despite a sore shoulder, caught 10 passes for 141 yards. It was his 62nd straight game with at least one reception, tying him with Jessie Hester for second behind Marshall Faulk's club-record 77 consecutive games.

DOLPHINS: Coach Dave Wannstedt is 3-10 against Vikings coach Dennis Green. Wannstedt was 3-9 while coach of the Bears. ... Receiver Tony Martin caught six passes for 120 yards.

JAGUARS: Third-string running back Chris Howard was forced to start because of injuries to Fred Taylor and Stacey Mack. Howard rushed eight times for 7 yards.

JETS: During the off-season, coach Al Groh was hardly a clubhouse favorite. Now it seems the players, some of whom were grumbling about the hard practices of the preseason bye week, are coming around. "You guys were saying we couldn't do it without Keyshawn (Johnson) and Bill (Parcells)," cornerback Aaron Glenn told the Daily News. "It goes to show you we can do it. We have a great coach. Al is in charge. This is Al's team."

PATRIOTS: Coach Bill Belichick's warmest feelings as he faced his former employers, the Jets, were for New York free safety Kevin Williams. When Williams was in the hospital with a throat infection last year, Belichick and his family spent significant time with him. "It's heartening for me to see him on the field and be the starting safety," Belichick told the Boston Globe. "The kid has a lot of will."

RAIDERS: How did the defense, as resistant as tissue paper in the first half, become a brick wall in the second half of a comeback victory at Indianapolis? "The key to the game was (middle linebacker) Greg Biekert," defensive tackle Darrell Russell said. Late in the first half, "He started to realize what calls they were making. He knew if they were going to run or pass. That helped us out big time because we were able to put people where they were supposed to be."

RAVENS: They are 2-0 for the first time. ... Peter Boulware, with two sacks, has 10 in seven games against the Jaguars. ... They had never overcome a 17-point deficit to win, and the 32 points were the most they've scored in one half.

SEAHAWKS: They had little argument with technology after their loss to the Rams: Instant replay review both helped and hurt. An apparent interception by Rams defensive end Grant Wistrom was nullified by an instant-replay review, allowing Seattle to continue with a scoring drive that tied the score at 34 in the fourth quarter. With 1:32 left, instant replay review upheld the officials' decision that an apparent Kurt Warner fumble was an incomplete forward pass. That wiped out Seattle linebacker Chad Brown's return of the loose ball for what could have been the clinching score.

STEELERS: Running back Jerome Bettis, who returned to practice Thursday, expects to play Sunday at Cleveland. Bettis was held to 8 yards on nine carries in a 16-0 opening loss to Baltimore, his worst game since joining the team in 1996. ... Linebacker Levon Kirkland never has missed a game, playing in all 129 since he turned pro in 1992. He injured his ankle against the Ravens but hopes to play.

TITANS: Their 9-0 start at Adelphia Stadium ties two teams for most victories at a new stadium. The Akron Indians (League Park in 1920) and the Buffalo Bisons (Canisius Field, also 1920) also did it.
