Boston Red Sox reliever Bryce Florie, at home recovering from a line drive to the face, is expected to return to the hospital in a day or two for further evaluation.

Florie, released from the hospital Sunday, called his teammates in the clubhouse as they prepared for a road trip with stops in New York, Cleveland and Detroit.

"He's okay, spirit-wise," teammate Rod Beck said. "He did say it was painful to talk."

Florie was struck by Ryan Thompson's liner in the ninth inning Friday night at Fenway Park.

Also, Steve Ontiveros signed after a five-year absence from the majors. His last big-league appearance was Sept. 29, 1995, with Oakland.

METS: Starting third baseman Robin Ventura, in an 0-for-22 slump, wasn't in the lineup for the second straight game.

PHILLIES: All-Star catcher Mike Lieberthal will have season-ending surgery Wednesday to remove a bone spur from his right elbow.

REDS: Ken Griffey Jr. left the game against Chicago after colliding at home plate with Cubs catcher Joe Girardi. Griffey was on the ground several minutes before limping to the clubhouse. The Reds said Griffey had a strained left hamstring and would be evaluated daily.

WHITE SOX: Broadcaster Ken "Hawk" Harrelson, in his 11th year broadcasting the team's games, signed an eight-year contract that goes through 2008. ... Third baseman Joe Crede, MVP of the Southern League, was called up from Double-A Birmingham.

YANKEES: Pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre left the team as planned to have a stem-cell transplant. Stottlemyre, 58, diagnosed with multiple myeloma a year ago during spring training, will likely miss the rest of the season.

MATHEWS STILL IN HOSPITAL: Hall of Famer Eddie Mathews remained in intensive care, on a breathing machine and unable to speak, but his wife said he has shown improvement. He has been hospitalized near San Diego since Sept. 3 because of a heart problem.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK: Astros teammates Richard Hidalgo and Julio Lugo were named co-players of the week in the National League, and Sox outfielder Carlos Lee and Athletics pitcher Barry Zito, who shut out the Rays on Sunday, shared American League honors.
