Mutiny forward Eric Quill will miss Thursday night's playoff opener against Los Angeles because of a sprained right ankle. Quill sustained the injury in the 90th minute of Saturday's game against Kansas City when he was tackled by Uche Okafor.

Quill scored both goals in the Mutiny's 2-2 tie against Kansas City. He has played in 30 games and started 25. He has five goals and 11 assists. His status for Game 2 of the series, Sept. 20 in Los Angeles, is questionable.

HOCKEY: Neal Broten, who played on teams that won an NCAA championship, an Olympic gold medal and a Stanley Cup, was among three inductees to the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame. Blues general manager Larry Pleau and USA Hockey executive director Doug Palazzari also will be inducted on Nov. 1. Broten led Minnesota to the NCAA title in 1979 and won the Hobey Baker Award in 1981 as the top player in college hockey. He was a member of the gold medal-winning American team in 1980. He played 17 years in the NHL, 16 of them with the Minnesota North Stars and Dallas Stars, and he won the 1995 Stanley Cup championship with the Devils.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Minnesota is suing former basketball coach Clem Haskins, looking to recover its $1.5-million contract buyout and contending he lied about academic cheating. "The university got ripped off, and we want our money back," university lawyer Lorie Gildea said at a news conference. Gildea said Haskins' admission to the NCAA that he secretly paid a former tutor $3,000 was the "smoking gun." The lawsuit also contends Haskins told players to mislead investigators after the story broke in March 1999.

CYCLING: Alvaro Gonzalez de Galdeano outsprinted four others down the stretch to win the 15th stage of the Tour of Spain, as Roberto Heras kept the overall lead. Gonzalez de Galdeano finished the 101-mile stage from Cangas de Onis to Gijon in 3 hours, 48 minutes and 11 seconds. Pascal Herve, Jon Odriozola, Massimilliano Gentili and Gianni Faresin all came in at the same time as Gonzalez de Galdeano.

HORSE RACING: Shining Nuggets used a strong finish to win the $109,100 I'm Smokin Stakes by two lengths against Proud Tower on the next-to-last day of the summer racing season at Del Mar.

GOLF: Defending champion Danny Green and 1999 runner-up Jerry Courville each won first-round matches in the 2000 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship in Hot Springs, Va. Green won the first two holes and birdied the 17th to defeat Tom Madden 2 and 1. Courville defeated Jonathan Oaks 4 and 2.

COLLEGES: The athletic department at Arkansas will add gymnastics, women's athletic director Bev Lewis said.

BUSINESS: Seth Abraham, president and chief executive officer of Time Warner Sports, was hired as executive vice president and chief operating officer of Madison Square Garden. ... Golfer Greg Norman signed with SFX Sports Group to handle his merchandising rights.
