Midair collision of small planes kills both pilots
FORT PIERCE -- Two small planes collided in midair Monday near St. Lucie County International Airport and crashed into an orange grove, killing both pilots.
The twin-engine Piper Aztec and single-engine Piper Cherokee collided about 1:15 p.m., 3 miles west of the airport. National Transportation Safety Board officials were investigating. They said both pilots were in contact with the St. Lucie control tower before the collision.
Authorities identified the pilot of the 26-year-old Aztec as Roger Boromei, 31, of Maineville, Ohio. The plane was registered to St. Lucie Petroleum Co. The Cherokee, built in 1988, was registered to Flight Safety International, a Vero Beach flight school. A spokesman declined to release the pilot's name pending notification of next of kin.
St. Petersburg man bitten by shark on east coast
DAYTONA BEACH SHORES -- A swimmer out body-boarding suffered minor injuries to a finger when a 2-foot shark bit him Monday.
Jason Armstrong, 25, of St. Petersburg was treated at a hospital and released. He said he was swimming in a pool of other fish when he was bitten.
"When it grabbed on, it felt like it took a couple of good bites," Armstrong said. "I rolled over onto my back and kind of just pulled it off a little."
There have been more than 20 shark attacks off Florida's coast this year. A St. Pete Beach man, Thadeus Kubinski, was killed by a shark near his dock Aug. 30.
