New Port Richey swimmer Tommy Wyher and Hudson gymnast Joyce Sposito each won gold medals last month in their respective sports.

Wyher earned three golds in the 2001 Southern Zone Championships on Aug. 1-4 in Columbia, S.C.

Wyher won the 50-meter backstroke in 30.91 seconds. He also earned a silver medal in the 200 individual medley and a bronze in the 200 free relay.

Sposito, a Hudson junior, won golds in floor exercises and the balance beam at the Amateur Athletic Union Junior Olympics in Hampton Roads, Va. She also earned silvers in the vault and all-around.

ROLLER HOCKEY: Tryouts for competitive roller hockey travel teams will be held Saturday at All Sports Arena.

Additionally, the East Coast Hockey Organization has scheduled a Sept. 21-23 tournament at the New Port Richey-based rink.

Florida Wildfire tryouts are for players ages 5 to 16 and will be held from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Cost is $5 per player.

For information about the Wildfire, call (727) 518-2106, and for information about the tournament, call (904) 287-1255.

FOOTBALL AS A FUNDRAISER: Shady Hills Pasco Police Athletic League director Anne Lenney said her organization reaped about $10,000 from hosting the organization's jamboree in August.

By hosting the PPAL Super Bowls and Super Cheeroffs on Nov. 17, Hudson director Edward Roe expects to at least match that figure.

"I can't wait for it," Roe said of the league's youth football and cheerleading championships.

"It's a major fundraiser for our organization and we're looking forward to it."

The PPAL football and cheerleading finals will be held at Hudson High's Cobra Stadium.
