Gulfport playground gets $50,000
GULFPORT -- The city has received a $50,000 state grant for new playground equipment at the beach playground.
The city is not required to provide matching funds for the grant, which is from the state Department of Environmental Protection and the Florida Recreation Development Assistance Program.
Gulfport's beach playground is located directly west of the Gulfport Casino.
City Manager Bob Lee estimated the current playground equipment is about eight years old.
"It's showing signs of wear and tear, and we want to improve it and make sure the equipment is safe and has the types of activities that kids find fun now," Lee said.
The semi-annual Coastal Clean-up Day is scheduled for Saturday. Volunteers should meet at 8:30 a.m. at Indian Shores Town Hall, 19305 Gulf Blvd.
Coffee and doughnuts will be available for early morning volunteers.
