Focus on volunteers

More than 50 local, non-profit organizations will participate in the 2-1-1 Volunteer Festival from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at ParkSide in Pinellas Park. Coordinated by Pinellas Cares 2-1-1 Volunteer Connection, the festival is designed to bring information on volunteer opportunities to the public. Organizations participating include American Red Cross, American Cancer Society, Center Against Spouse Abuse, Pinellas Habitat for Humanity, Pinellas County Schools, SPCA, PARC and Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Pinellas County. The St. Petersburg Free Clinic, 863 Third Ave. N, will hold two volunteer orientation sessions at the following times and dates: 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 19 and 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Sept. 29. For information, call Kelli Caputo at 821-1200, ext. 118.

The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of Pinellas Opportunity Council Inc., in partnership with Hi-Five Pinellas, a program of Eckerd Youth Alternatives Inc., is looking for volunteers to serve as mentors to students. The senior volunteers will be paired with children in grades 4 and 5, who are vulnerable to substance abuse, delinquency, academic failure or other challenges. The mentors visit the student once a week and can share either recreational or educational activities. For information, call Lori Osborne, project coordinator at RSVP, at 327-8690, ext. 25.

Sojourn Bear, a volunteer organization based in Treasure Island, distributes handmade teddy bears to cancer patients throughout Tampa Bay. The group is in need of volunteers, either individuals or crafting circles, to cut, sew and stuff the gifts. The instructions and patterns are distributed by Sojourn Bear. There is also a need for office help, fundraisers, project coordinators and grant writers. For information, call Jan Burlew at 481-9782.

The Florida Botanical Garden at the Pinellas County Cooperative Extension Service, 12175 125th St. N, Largo, needs volunteers to help with clerical duties. For information, call Jean Field at 582-2016.
