WEIRD BAND NAMES

Band name: Rancid Polecats

Their sound: The Polecats' Mike Pena says, "It's very different. It's like a comedy thing mixed in with some hard-edged guitar, alternative-style music. Some of it's punk, some of it's lighter stuff." The Tampa sextet also does a polka and a slow-shuffle version of Ozzy Osbourne's Crazy Train.

What's up with the name: Pena said Jack Tummond, the band's original bassist and the first of seven, "had seen a Monty Python episode where they're all sitting around a camp fire, and they heard a weird sound. One guy says, "What was that?" And the other guy says, "It sounds like a rancid polecat."

Where to catch them: Tonight at the Brass Mug, (813) 972-8152.

Where to buy their music: On their Web site, http://www.rancidpolecats.com, or at their shows.
