Bulls bitsBy ROD GIPSON © St. Petersburg Times, published September 15, 2000 TAMPA -- In beating Central Florida on Tuesday, the Bulls volleyball team improved to 7-0 and is off to its best start since 1974. USF topped UCF 15-6, 15-7, 15-1 and had a combined hitting percentage of .350 with 46 kills and only 11 errors. The Bulls travel to Madison, Wis., this weekend to participate in the Inntowner Invitational, where they will face Rice, Dayton and 15th-ranked Wisconsin. Individually, the Bulls have gained notice as well, with sophomore outside hitter Michelle Collier earning Conference USA Player of the Week honors. Collier led the Bulls to the Clemson Big Orange Bash title, the team's second consecutive tournament title. En route to her second consecutive tourney MVP honor, Collier hit .392 with 61 kills, 28 digs and 6 aces in 10 games. Collier helped USF knock off 1999 NCAA Tournament teams Davidson and Clemson, hitting .704 against the Wildcats with 26 kills against the Tigers. Collier missed the bulk of last season after injuring her knee. MEN'S SOCCER: The Bulls are off to a rough start after Wednesday's 2-1 loss to Florida Atlantic dropped them to 0-4. David Ambush scored off of a deflection 32 minutes into the match to tie it at 1. But USF gave up the lead 12 minutes into the second half. The Bulls face Coastal Carolina today and Furman on Sunday as part of the Umbro Invitational in Greenville, S.C. They return home Wednesday to face Stetson. CROSS COUNTRY: The men's and women's teams won their opening races at the Mountaineer Classic at Appalachian State. The men claimed four of the top eight positions, including first place, on its way to collecting 30 points to finish atop the seven-team field. Russ Gerbers led the Bulls, finishing first in 25 minutes, 30 seconds. For Gerbers, it was his second individual victory in as many tries on the course. In the women's race, USF took five of the first 11 spots. WOMEN'S GOLF: USF finished ninth at the Tiger-Derby Invitational tournament at Auburn, shooting 938, 44 strokes behind champion Auburn. The Bulls were led by transfer Fany Schaeffer, who shot a 54-hole 231, finishing in a tie for 21st. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
