WHAT: Short-track competition in the 50-lap Auto Trader Street Stock Championship, as well as in the Open Wheel Modified, Figure 8, Outlaw Late Model, Mini Stock and Hornet classes.
WHEN: Pit gates open at 4 p.m., grandstands at 5. Street Stock time trials start at 6 p.m., racing at 7.
WHERE: Sunshine Speedway, 4550 Ulmerton Road (State Road 688).
ADMISSION: Adults, $10; children 6-12, $4; children under 6, free; pits, $18; parking, free.
NOTES: They are not the fastest, and they're not the prettiest, but Street Stock cars are the kings of beat-and-bang. There are more Street Stocks than any other class of cars at Sunshine Speedway, which means the competition to qualify for the 50-lap Auto Trader race will be intense. Promoters said they expect about 40 cars to attempt to qualify. Picking a likely winner virtually is impossible because there simply are too many drivers who could do it. The top 10 in points include leader No. 98 Roger Welch, No. 1 Dan Rieger, No. 22 Mike Hill, No. 27 Harold Ashley, No. 77 Brian Rogers, No. 75 Craig Robinson, No. 81 Dave Ochsenwald, No. 7 Jeff Haven, No. 24 Dave Cleary and No. 12 Jay Coleman. Whoever starts up front will have a big advantage because they should be able to avoid the carnage behind them. Watch for a lot of old-fashioned door rubbing and bumper-bending.
