Canadiens sign a free-agent defenseman MONTREAL -- Defenseman Darryl Shannon signed a one-year, $700,000 deal with the Canadiens on Sunday.
Shannon, 32, had six goals and 21 assists in 76 games last season with Atlanta and Calgary, where he earned $1-million.
"We saw a chance to get another defenseman with NHL experience," Montreal general manager Rejean Houle said. "He's an offensive defenseman, a good skater with a good first pass."
The Canadiens are missing three veteran defensemen. Craig Rivet remains out of camp, unsigned, while Patrice Brisebois is nursing a sore back and Karl Dykhuis is recovering from off-season abdominal surgery.
THRASHERS: Goalie Norm Maracle was one of 18 players cut by the Atlanta on Saturday and reassigned to Orlando of the IHL. Maracle reported to training camp out of shape last year, underachieved in his first season and then reported to camp this year at 12 pounds over his target weight.
BRUINS 7, CANADIENS 2: Kyle Wanvig scored twice for visiting Boston.
Boston was coached by assistants Peter Laviolette and Jacques Laperriere. Coach Pat Burns returned to Boston for personal reasons that were not disclosed after Friday's game in Buffalo.
Boston scored on three successive shots in the third period. Wanvig had two of the goals, and Brian Rolston scored the other.
COYOTES 3, AVALANCHE 2: Brad May scored the winning goal and Teppo Numminen had two assists host for Phoenix. The Coyotes, who lost their first two games, built a 2-0 lead on first-period power-play goals by Keith Tkachuk and Shane Soan.
The Coyotes took a 3-0 lead 3:01 into the second on May's goal.
Martin Skoula and Alex Tanguay scored second-period, power-play goals for Colorado, which lost for the first time in three games.
BLUE JACKETS 4, PREDATORS 2: Steve Maltais scored twice to lead Columbus to the franchise's first win over Nashville in Fairborn, Ohio. Maltais scored a power-play goal 9:18 into the third period, and scored again less than three minutes later. Mathieu Darche gave the Blue Jackets a 1-0 lead in the first period.
RED WINGS 4, DEVILS 3 (OT): Brent Gilchrist scored his second goal of the game 49 seconds into overtime, giving Detroit a win at home.
Gilchrist also had an assist, and Doug Brown had a goal and an assist in Detroit's preseason opener. Boyd Devereaux also scored for the Red Wings. Devereaux's goal with 4:45 remaining in the second period gave Detroit a 3-2 lead.
SABRES 3, BLACKHAWKS 0: Mika Noronen stopped 24 shots to lead visiting Buffalo. Stu Barnes and Denis Hamel scored power-play goals for the Sabres.
KINGS 4, MIGHTY DUCKS 0: Zigmund Palffy scored twice and set up two goals and Stephane Fiset and Steve Passmore combined to stop 16 shots as Los Angeles beat visiting Anaheim.
Palffy, who had 27 goals and 66 points despite missing 18 games in his first season with the Kings, assisted on Rob Blake's power-play tally midway through the first period.
MAPLE LEAFS 3, FLAMES 1: Danny Markov scored a shorthanded goal from beyond the red line with 5:33 remaining as host Toronto recorded a victory over Calgary.
The Maple Leafs were outshot in the third period, 8-2, but scored from more than 100 feet out on both chances.
