Bosox suspend Tampa's Everett for 4 games

BOSTON -- The Red Sox suspended Carl Everett for four games on Monday, a day after he reported late to a workout.

It was the latest in a series of penalties against the outfielder, a former Hillsborough High star.

Everett reportedly berated manager Joe Kerrigan, who had told him to leave when he arrived late. He also had several run-ins with Jimy Williams, fired as manager Aug. 16.

Everett was suspended 10 games by baseball last season for bumping umpire Ron Kulpa and one game by the team this year in spring training for arriving late and missing the bus.

Then he arrived late Sunday.

"The club was not pleased with the incident over the weekend and we felt a strong need to sanction the behavior," general manager Dan Duquette said.

Everett also was fined an undisclosed amount, but Duquette wouldn't say whether the player argued with Kerrigan. He referred reporters to stories in Monday's newspapers citing such a dispute.

CARDINALS: Bud Smith's hitless string ended at 11 innings when Jose Hernandez of Milwaukee singled off the left-hander to start the third inning.

Smith, 21, became the 16th rookie in modern history to throw a no-hitter in his last start, Sept. 3 at San Diego. After throwing 134 pitches, he was bypassed in his next scheduled start.

EXPOS: Montreal rejected a proposal from the Rockies to move a four-game series from Olympic Stadium to Denver to help raise funds for victims of last week's terrorist attacks.

A team spokesman said the Expos rejected the plan and instead would contribute money for the victims, though not necessarily from ticket revenue.

"We would draw between 30,000 and 40,000 here, compared to 3,000 there," Rockies owner Jerry McMorris said. "It's an opportunity for some significant fund-raising, whereas in Montreal the crowds have been predictably very small."

ORIOLES: Baltimore rescheduled its regular-season finale, the last game of Cal Ripken's 21-year career, to avoid a conflict with the NFL's Ravens.

The Orioles were supposed to end the season Sept. 30, but will play three makeup games against Toronto from Oct. 1-3, then finish the season with four home games against Boston from Oct. 4-6, including a day-night doubleheader on Oct. 5.

The Orioles moved their final game from Oct. 7 to the day before because the Ravens are scheduled to play Tennessee on Sunday. Because of potential traffic problems around Camden Yards, the Orioles probably wouldn't have been able to start the game on Sunday until 9 p.m.

TIGERS: Detroit changed its rotation for the series against the Twins: Steve Sparks will start Wednesday and Jose Lima on Thursday.

OBITUARY: George Bradley, a longtime executive who once ran the Yankees, died Friday of a heart attack at the age of 58. Bradley died in Tampa, where he lived with his parents.

Bradley's career spanned almost 30 years. He spent the last 10 with the White Sox, including the last year as a special assistant to general manager Kenny Williams.
