Coach's friend missing in NYC

DURHAM, N.C. -- With 11 players on his roster from New York or New Jersey, Duke coach Carl Franks expected the worst when he asked for a show of hands from those with parents or relatives who worked at the World Trade Center.

He never imagined he would be the one grieving this week.

Rob Lenoir, a former Duke defensive end who played with Franks in the early 1980s and was one of his fraternity brothers, is missing after terrorists ran two planes into New York's twin towers Sept. 11.

Lenoir was working for an investment firm on the 104th floor of 2 World Trade Center.

"He's got a wife and two kids; whew, that's pretty tough," said Franks, bowing his head and turning away as he tried to keep his emotions in check.

ALABAMA: R.D. Hicks donated much of the money for North Jackson High's football stadium, which bears his name, and admits to giving money to promising players. But the Stevenson, Ala., businessman and two other North Jackson supporters, accused by the NCAA of paying a prep star to sign with the Crimson Tide, said the gifts had nothing to do with college football.

NORTHWESTERN: The school has yet to find an opponent to replace Saturday's canceled game against Navy. "We're constrained somewhat by dates ... (and) it would have to be an opponent that would be satisfactory," athletic director Rick Taylor said.

TENNESSEE: Defensive tackle Edward Kendrick has been ruled academically ineligible for this season, coach Phillip Fulmer said.
