Trial set for woman in shooting deathBy Times staff writer © St. Petersburg Times, published September 19, 2000 TAMPA -- A judge has set a Dec. 11 trial for the woman accused of shooting her ex-husband 16 times in May before surviving a plunge off the Sunshine Skyway bridge. Kathy Freeman, 42, was in court Monday, having recovered from injuries sustained in the failed suicide attempt. She remains in Hillsborough County jail without bail. Investigators say Freeman shot to death her 54-year-old ex-husband, Grover Freeman, a medical malpractice attorney, then tried to kill his wife, Connie Freeman, in the couple's lakefront home in Carrollwood. Connie Freeman told detectives that Kathy Freeman whipped her with the pistol, which had jammed, and dragged her by the hair to the balcony of the two-story house. As Kathy Freeman tried to throw her off the balcony, Connie Freeman told authorities, she managed to break free. Investigators say Kathy Freeman bought the gun two weeks before the killing from a man in Duluth, Ga., for $500. Documents released since the killing present a picture of Kathy Freeman as struggling financially. She owed $75,000 to credit card companies. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
