Box 2942, Largo, FL 33779-2942. School district offers mentoring workshopLearn effective mentoring strategies at a free workshop sponsored by Pinellas County schools. The workshop will be offered 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at Skycrest Elementary, Media Center, 10 N Corona Ave., Clearwater, and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the Stavros Institute, Track Room, 12100 Starkey Road, Largo. Fall workshop for school volunteersThe Pinellas County of PTAs and the Pinellas County Schools' Office of Community Involvement is hosting the annual fall workshop for PTAs and School Advisory Councils. This workshop will be held 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Pinellas Park High School, 6305 118th Ave N, Largo. The annual event offers training and educational workshops to promote the objectives of PTA and school improvement initiatives. Basic information sessions about the school system and workshops to enhance parenting skills round out the schedule. Some of the workshop topics include information on running effective meetings, character education, partnerships, the proposed student assignment plan and basic training for PTAs and School Advisory Councils. SAT prep classesSt. Petersburg Junior College is offering preparation classes for the Scholastic Assessment Test at five high schools: Countryside, Dunedin, East Lake, Palm Harbor University and Tarpon Springs. Classes will meet from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays Oct. 5 through Nov. 30. The cost is $99 and includes a textbook. This year's classes are using a new curriculum that combines the math and verbal review. Students will receive official retired practice tests and review questions and will learn test-taking strategies. Classes also will be held Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon beginning Sept. 30 at SPJC's Seminole Campus, 9200 113th St. N, Seminole, and Allstate Center, 3200 34th St. S. Those classes cost $89. County science center celebrates fallThe Science Center of Pinellas County, 7701 22nd Ave. N, will hold its annual Fall Festival from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. The festival will feature archaeological demonstrations and presentations such as spear throwing, pottery making, 16th-century weaving, native cooking and live American Indian flute music. Financial aid and scholarship programThe Largo High School guidance deparment, in conjunction with the PTSA, will present a program on college scholarships and financial aid at 7 p.m. Sept. 26 in the school media center, 410 Missouri Ave., Largo. VFW sponsors contestHigh school students are eligible to enter an audio-essay contest sponsored by VFW Post 10093 of Safety Harbor.
