Driven by success

The United States' Tom Malchow will be driving in style after winning the 200 butterfly gold. Just before the Atlanta Games four years ago, his father, Tim, promised him a Corvette if he won a gold medal. Malchow took silver, but dad never set a statute of limitations. Also at swimming, the Australian crowd got its thrills with victories by Susie O'Neill (200 freestyle) and the men's 800 free relay team.

One threat out

Marion Jones' quest for five gold medals got a lot easier. Inger Miller, second to Jones in the 100 and 200 meters at the U.S. trials and considered one of Jones' chief rivals in both events, will miss the 100 and is questionable for the rest of the Games because of an injury.

Off-beat

Where's the Raid?

Strange but true: The giant native cockroaches of northern Australia are sometimes kept as pets.

What time is it?

Sydney is 15 hours ahead of Tampa Bay, so as most people read their morning paper, today's events are wrapping up in Australia. We have converted schedules and other references to Tampa Bay time. For the latest results, check the Times Web site at http://www.sptimes.com
