The right-hander has won just once in 13 starts since June 20. And it won't get any better tonight based on past results: Rupe is 0-3 in four starts against Boston with a 9.43 ERA. Rupe has allowed 26 homers in 1261/3 innings, matching Esteban Yan's 2000 team record
The veteran right-hander has resurrected his career after spending the 1999 season in the minors. Castillo was 10-5 with a 3.59 ERA for Toronto last season and is 8-8, 4.37 with the Sox. He is 1-0 with a 3.45 ERA against the Rays.
After adding James Lofton to their roster Wednesday afternoon, the Red Sox provided the Rays with a thorough statistical package on the rookie infielder, about 10 pages' worth. Manager Hal McRae said he preferred the basic information. "I want to have the vanilla version," McRae said. "They gave me the Haagen-Dazs."
