Castle of Azraq
Before Ralph Montgomery went into hiding from Iraqis in Kuwait in 1990, he made this graphic of the gate to the castle of Azraq, in Jordan, now on view at the Beach Art Center. The gate was built in the 13th century of a solid piece of black basalt; the castle was headquarters of Lawrence of Arabia during the closing days of World War I. Also among more than 100 works by Montgomery, a retired architect, are highling detailed pencil still lifes he made while in hiding. The artist will be present on the last day of his show 1-5 p.m. Sunday. The Beach Art Center is at 1515 Bay Palm Blvd., Indian Rocks Beach (next to City Hall). Hours today and Friday are 9 a.m.-noon; closed Saturday. Free. (727) 596-4331.
Artist, architect, hostage
Scenes of New England are just part of the show of works by versatile artist Ralph E. Montgomery, now at the Beach Art Center. In addition to watercolors, graphics and acrylics, he exhibits drawings made while he was held hostage by Iraqis in Kuwait in 1990.
