USF sets game at Oklahoma

TAMPA -- The USF-Oklahoma game has been set for Sept. 28, 2002, in Norman.

The game will feature intriguing links. Former Oklahoma All-American Lee Roy Selmon is athletic director at USF and his son, Lee Roy Jr., is a defensive lineman for the Bulls and will be a redshirt junior in 2002. Coaches Bob Stoops and Jim Leavitt were co-defensive coordinators at Kansas State from 1991-95, and Leavitt and Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione are fellow graduates of the University of Missouri.

"Our entire program is tremendously excited about the opportunity to play Oklahoma," Selmon said. "We're very appreciative of the opportunity."

RUBIN SLOWED: Wide receiver DeAndrew Rubin, who has a turf toe injury, participated in individual drills. '(Rubin) didn't do everything today, but he did a lot of things," Leavitt said. "He looked fairly good today."

UF guard gets his chance

GAINESVILLE -- Guard Erik Strange will have to capitalize on his opportunity to start this weekend.

Strange will make his third career start against Kentucky at right guard in place of Tommy Moody, who started the first two games.

"We'll give him a chance to see if he can play better than Moody," coach Steve Spurrier said. "If he does, he'll be the starter for the whole year, if he's not Moody will get a chance to come back."

Strange will have familiar company on the right side, where sophomore Max Starks starts at tackle.

Starks and Strange are Orlando natives, Strange from Boone High and Starks from Lake Highland Prep.

"I think it's a good opportunity for him," Starks said. "We talked about it, saying Orlando on the right side."

GAME TAPE: Spurrier said he would not watch the South Carolina-Mississippi State game Thursday night because he watched son Scotty play receiver for P.K. Yonge. He said he would watch a tape.

KENTUCKY KICKER OUT: Seth Hanson, who has been recovering from a strained leg muscle, will not kick against Florida, coach Guy Morriss said. Defensive tackle Jeremy Caudill probably will play. He missed the first two games with a back injury.

FSU ending long layoff

TALLAHASSEE -- Coach Bobby Bowden is curious to see how Florida State will play Saturday against North Carolina after a two-week layoff.

"We've done about everything we can do to prepare," Bowden said. "Now, we just got to get up and play the ballgame. It seems like it's been a year since we've played a ballgame."

The Seminoles have not played since a 29-7 win over Alabama-Birmingham on Sept. 8. They have spent six days preparing for the winless Tar Heels.

EMANUEL STARTS: Sophomore Kevin Emanuel will start Saturday at defensive end with sophomore Charles Howard the backup. Howard has not been bothered by his strained right hamstring during practice this week.

SURGERY: Center David Castillo will have surgery today on his left hand. The freshman has not played this season.

INJURY REPORT:Defensive end Charles Howard (strained right hamstring) and defensive back Jerome Carter (sprained left elbow) are probable. Defensive lineman Travis Johnson (sprained left ankle) is questionable. Fullback Randy Golightly (torn Achilles' tendon), cornerback Leroy Smith (injured right knee) and defensive end Eric Powell (gunshot wound) are out.
