Heavy medal

The Americans won eight swimming medals, including Lenny Krayzelburg's 200-meter backstroke gold, but the Netherlands' Inge de Bruijn won the 100 freestyle to thwart Jenny Thompson's final bid for an individual gold. Thompson and Dara Torres finished third. A Dutch reporter asked de Bruijn about kissing the crown prince of the Netherlands, and she shot back, saying: "I didn't kiss him. He kissed me."

Bad dream

Is the dominance almost over for the U.S. men's basketball team? The Americans posted a sloppy 85-76 victory over Lithuania in a game that was in doubt down to the final minute. Alonzo Mourning didn't seem alarmed. "To tell you the truth, hands down, we're going to win the gold medal in this Olympics," he said.

5 centimeters of separation

The women's gymnastics all-around medals were swept by the Romanians, but the results were marred by a poor setup on the vault, which was 5 centimeters -- about 2 inches -- shorter than it should have been for the first two rotations. Russia's Svetlana Khorkina, the elegantly tall Russian who had been a favorite to win her first all-around championship, and American Elise Ray were among those affected. "This is a major blemish on the Olympics," said 1984 men's all-around silver medalist Peter Vidmar.

What time is it?

Sydney is 15 hours ahead of Tampa Bay, so as most people read their morning paper, today's events are wrapping up in Australia. We have converted schedules and other references to Tampa Bay time. For the latest results, check the Times Web site at http://www.sptimes.com/olympics.

While you were sleeping

Some of the events completed after deadline for today's paper: Brooke Bennett's bid for a repeat in the 800 freestyle, the men's shot put final, several track and field preliminaries, and finals in archery, fencing, trampoline, badminton, table tennis and judo.
