Daily fishing report

Reports of trout and redfish have been coming in daily. The calm weather and good tides of the past week have given many fishermen a chance to scout the bay. Finding clean water and schools of bait have been key factors.

Trout have been hanging on the edges or deeper depressions of the flats. Working artificial lures ahead of a drift has been the most effective method. Concentrating casts to grassy points that jut into sandy holes have accounted for the largest trout. Smaller fish have been bunched around schools of tiny baits providing an excellent target for fly-rodders.

Redfish have been pushing into the shallows with the rising tide. Loosely scattered pods can be found feeding around schools of mullet. A quiet approach and a lot of patience may be needed. Getting on the flat ahead of the fish and letting them come to you may keep them from spooking. Dollar-size pinfish suspended under a cork will draw the most strikes.

With today's early, high outgoing tide, plan your trip to begin well on the flats or close to the mangroves. Start with a topwater mullet imitation. As the sun rises higher and the tide falls, switch to a spoon or a jig and gradually work your way off the flat. Take advantage of the late morning minor solunar-feeding period on a deeper edge or dropoff. With any luck, cooler water temperatures may extend the bite into mid-day.
