Two east Pasco County schools emptied unexpectedly Friday afternoon after fire alarms went off, school and fire officials said.

A malfunctioning fire alarm led to the evacuation at 1:38 p.m. of West Zephyrhills Elementary School, said Assistant Chief Jim Johnson of the Zephyrhills Fire Department. Firefighters were at the school at 37900 14th Ave. for less than 20 minutes.

The alarm was probably set off by dust, Capt. Warren Errickson said.

Less than an hour later, Wesley Chapel High School, 30651 Wells Road, emptied to the sound of its fire alarm. The alarm went off after the school day had ended, and most students had already gone home, principal Andy Frelick said.

A paper touching an overhead projector started smoking, Frelick said. Administrators smelled smoke and pulled the fire alarm.

Firefighters responded but didn't find any fire.
