Services will be held at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, officiated by Rabbi Cyrus Arfa. High Point firefighters plan candlelight vigilHIGH POINT -- The High Point Volunteer Fire Department will host a candlelight vigil in the community center at 6 p.m. today in memory of the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. High Point is off Cortez Boulevard west of Mariner Boulevard, and the community center is at 12249 Clubhouse Drive. For information, call 597-9927. Business owner starts T-shirt fundraiserGus Guadagnino, owner of Joni Industries and Seaboard Pencil Co. at the Airport Industrial Park, is doing what he feels is his patriotic duty. Hoping to lift spirits in the wake of the terrorist attacks, he designed a T-shirt depicting a patriotic theme. He doesn't want to make a profit; he just wants whatever people can afford to give, so he can pass the proceeds on to the New York Twin Towers Relief Fund and the Police and Fire Widows and Children Benefit Fund. He hopes to raise $100,000 for the charities. The T-shirts are available at: Jiffy Car Wash, the Kiddie Kampus Preschool Academy, Keys Construction, Oak Hill Hospital and the Hernando County School Board, in addition to Joni Industries. Brooksville firefighters accepting donationsBROOKSVILLE -- The Brooksville Fire Department is accepting donations today for families of firefighters and police officers who lost their lives in the New York City rescue effort. Firefighters will be in shopping center parking lots at Cortez Boulevard and Broad Street to collect money. They will send the collection to a fund in New York that has been set up for the families, said Lt. Dennis Wilfong. Money also can be donated at the Brooksville Fire Department, 85 Veterans Ave. Domino Club plans candlelight vigilSPRING HILL -- The Spring Hill Domino Club plans a candlelight vigil at 7 p.m. today for the son of Hernando County school bus driver Manny Mojica, a New York firefighter who perished in the World Trade Center attack, and a New York police officer who was injured. The club is on Spring Hill Drive, just west of Mariner Boulevard. Local United Way to aid New YorkIn response to the attack on America, the Hernando County United Way board of directors has voted to provide funding to the United Way of New York City by contributing to the September 11th Fund, established for emergency assistance to the victims and their families. The board is sending $5,250. Anyone wishing to contribute to the fund through the United Way can send checks to United Way of Hernando County, 4040 Commercial Way, Spring Hill, FL 34606. Entertainment books to raise funds Entertainment 2002 books are now being offered by Branch 5532 of Aid Association for Lutherans of Spring Hill to raise money for the families of firefighters and police victims in New York. The books are $20 each, and include 50 percent off and two-for-one offers at area restaurants, cultural and sporting venues, and trades and shops. Beware of fraudulent solicitations The Hernando County Sheriff's Office is warning residents about two illegitimate organizations currently trying to collect money in the aftermath of the terror attacks. The names being used are the National Law Enforcement Officer Inc. and the National Law Enforcement Memorial Inc. These organizations don't exist, said Lt. Joe Paez, public information officer for the Sheriff's Office. The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund exists, but does not make telephone solicitations.
