Ever-present reminders

All the players had decals of the American flag affixed to their helmets, but FSU quarterback Chris Rix went further to remember the terrorist attacks. He had "NY, DC" written on tape on his right wrist.

Take our word

The casual observer wouldn't have noticed an inordinate number of UNC police officers at Kenan Stadium, but that was by design. School officials said security numbers were, in fact, greater.

Added number

The UNC band opened its pregame performance with a piece it doesn't usually play, God Bless America. It brought a thunderous ovation.

Practice needed

UNC fans needed nearly 45 minutes to pull down the goal post in the west end of Kenan Stadium. But forgive them. They last celebrated in that fashion Oct. 8, 1994, after a 31-24 win against Georgia Tech.
