In the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, military personnel, police and firefighters, and their families, were admitted free to Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium for the game.

Tightening things up

With 20,000 to 25,000 expected to attend, there wasn't a no-fly zone in effect at the stadium, as was the case at several other games. However, stadium security was increased. Bob Winn, the assistant athletic director for media relations at Memphis, said there would be a heightened security presence and that fans carrying backpacks, bags, purses, etc., would have those items checked extensively.

No big deal

The game was no better than the third-biggest event of the weekend in Memphis. In fact, it wasn't the biggest event in the neighborhood. The Mid-South Fair drew thousands to the area surrounding the stadium, creating a traffic jam all afternoon. Also, the National Hot Rod Association was in Memphis for the weekend AutoZone Nationals.
