NORTH LAUDERDALE -- A 16-year-old boy stole American flags from his neighbors' yards, hoping to take advantage of the public's patriotic fervor after the terrorist attacks to sell them at a flea market, authorities said.
The teen, whose name was not released, and two 15-year-old friends were arrested for possession of alcohol by a minor after police noticed two open bottles of beer on the front seat and a six-pack in the back, the Broward County Sheriff's Office said.
During a search of the car, police found 49 flags in the trunk.
Charges are pending against the 16-year-old on the theft of the flags, officials said.
All three suspects are students at Cypress Run Alternative/ESE Center in Pompano Beach, police said.
North Lauderdale police stopped the car Thursday because it matched the description of one involved in a window-breaking incident earlier in the week.
All three boys were released to their parents.
