SPC selects hoops coach

In the 1970s, Joe Molloy and Mike Moran were classmates at Tampa Catholic. More than 20 years later, they're united again at a catholic school, only this time on the other side of the bay.

Molloy, the St. Petersburg Catholic athletic director, has hired his old buddy Moran to be the boys basketball coach.

"I didn't do any real searching. When I found out Mike was available, I called him," Molloy said. "He told me he was not coaching, and I said, "Hello, what about an opportunity here?"

Moran replaces Tim Ryan, who resigned in July after compiling a 50-36 record in three seasons. Ryan is an assistant coach at Hillsborough Community College.

Moran, 39, was the head coach at Plant from 1986-90 and at King from 1990-92, compiling a combined 92-60 record. He was an assistant coach at Tampa from 1994 through 1999, during which time UT went 94-51.

"They won 18 games last year, so obviously I'm not coming into a situation where the cupboard is bare," Moran said. "I expect to contend for the district. ... We'll push it up the floor and cover people all over the floor."

Moran also will teach Marine Biology and Algebra I at SPC.
