The pitchers

Paul Wilson

Wilson had a brutal two months in the rotation and two more exiled to the bullpen. Since rejoining the rotation in late July, he is 5-1 with a 2.89 ERA in nine starts, and the Rays have won seven. Wilson, who is 7-8, last lost Aug. 15 at Yankee Stadium.

Andy Pettitte

After a midseason stint on the disabled list, Pettitte has rounded into his usual top form. Want proof? He has walked 17 in his past 15 starts. Pettitte is particularly tough against the Rays, going 7-1 with a 3.72 ERA in 11 career starts, 4-0, 3.75 at Yankee Stadium.

You don't say

For security and logistical concerns, the Rays broke from normal routine and didn't travel to New York until Tuesday morning. Manager Hal McRae was asked the last time he remembered flying in the day of a game. "Probably 1976," McRae said. "I was with Kansas City, going to Seattle, and you had the time difference. And the second day we were dead tired."
