Focus on Volunteers

WMNF-FM 88.5 will hold its Fall Fundraiser Oct. 7-14. The non-profit radio station at 1210 E Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Tampa, needs volunteers to help answer phones during the event. Call Gene Moore at 813-238-8001, ext. 26.

Florida's Department of Elder Affairs is seeking volunteers to work in its SHINE (Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders) program. An orientation session will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 3-5 at the second-floor conference room of the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council, 9455 Koger Blvd., Suite 219, St. Petersburg.

Volunteers will be trained to give individual counseling about Medicare, Medicaid, long-term care and other issues to residents of Pinellas and Pasco counties. For information, call Tyrone L. Jackson at 570-5151, ext. 237.

A volunteer workshop for those interested in teaching English to Asian immigrants will be held this weekend at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, 301 37th Ave. N, St. Petersburg. The workshop will focus on serving Laotian, Cambodian, and Vietnamese families. The registration fee is $5 in advance and $10 at the door. For information, call 327-7018.

The Hospice of the Florida Suncoast will hold two volunteer orientation classes for people interested in learning more about opportunities within the organization at the south community service center, 5639 49th St. N, St. Petersburg. The classes will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 10 and from 1 to 4 p.m. Oct. 30. For information, call Kathy Roble at 586-4432.

Pinellas County Rolling Readers will hold orientation meetings Oct. 12 and 14 for those interested in tutoring children in reading as well as reading aloud to groups of children. The meetings will be at St. Petersburg's Main Library, 3745 Ninth Ave. N. For information, call J.J. Stein at 402-7323.

The Community Involvement department for Pinellas County Schools will be holding mentoring workshops for those interested in spending one hour a week tutoring students. The workshops will be held at different locations throughout October. For information, call 588-6405.
