Fireman Apprentice Nicholas Joseph Manarino, son of Joseph and Jan Manarino of St. Petersburg, completed basic training in July at the U.S. Coast Guard basic training facility at Cape May, N.J. Manarino, a 1999 graduate of Dixie Hollins High School, is stationed in Key West aboard the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Mohawk.

Electrician's Mate Petty Officer 3rd Class Thomas G. Clearwater, son of Lee and Dody Duve of St. Petersburg, was promoted to his present rank while serving aboard the Sixth Fleet commandship La Salle. The ship's home port is in Gaeta, Italy. Clearwater, a 1997 graduate of St. Petersburg Catholic High School, joined the Navy in May 1998.

Rebecca A. Piotrowski, daughter of retired Col. William F. and Katherine H. Anderson of West Chester, Pa., and a former resident of St. Petersburg, received a physician's commission into the U.S. Air Force. She will attend Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale on an Air Force scholarship. Piotrowski is a 1993 graduate of Syracuse University.
