Ryan Rupe
Rupe Thursday pitched one of his best games in months, holding the Red Sox to one run and five hits over six innings. In 14 starts since June 20, he has six losses and one win (Aug. 11). Rupe is 1-1 with a 4.86 ERA against the Jays.
The 21-year-old right-hander has made eight starts since being called up, going 5-3 with a 4.80 ERA. Lyon, a 1999 draft pick, gave up six runs on eight hits over five innings in Friday's loss to the Rays.
There have been 24 days between the Rays' last home game and tonight's, one of the longest stretches in modern times. The Rays PR department found three others of note. In 1994, the Mariners went the last 24 days (20 games) of the strike-shortened season without a home game. In 1992, the Astros went on a 26-game, 28-day road trip because the Republican National Convention was being held at the Astrodome. In 1991, the Expos played their final 26 games on the road after a 55-ton cement beam fell from Olympic Stadium on Sept. 13.
