Blues at Bourbon Street

Blues lovers rejoice! Even if you can't get up to Rock Crusher Canyon for the big blues fest, you can check out legendary blues guitarist Hubert Sumlin's elegant riffs at Bourbon Street in New Port Richey. Sumlin can be heard on Howlin' Wolf's Smokestack Lightnin' and other classics he co-wrote with his beloved mentor and bandmate. Sumlin, whom Jimi Hendrix hailed as his very favorite guitarist, told Guitar Player this about playing with Wolf: "We were so together, we didn't think about nothing. We just knowed. This is it."

Now 69, Sumlin, whose very first gig was playing with harmonica genius James Cotton, still lives the blues. He's been nominated for several Grammys in recent years. He's still putting on that suit and tie, letting his fingers do the talking, only nowadays, salty old Sumlin's singing too.

There's a reason Clapton and Richards fall over their feet genuflecting to this guy. Sumlin is the real deal.

Hubert Sumlin performs at 9:30 p.m. Friday at Bourbon Street night club, 4331 US 19, New Port Richey. The Sean Chambers band opens. Tickets are $10 advance, $12 at the door. (727) 841-9904 or (727) 843-0686.

Chuck Prophet at Skipper's

Crooner, screamer and wicked good guitar player Chuck Prophet will surely stir things up with his soulful roots rock at Skipper's Smokehouse.

The former Green on Red guitarist eschewed the psychedelic sound for something earthier. This year, Prophet released the stunning Hurting Business, featuring him sing-speaking a la Tom Waits in his brooding baritone. With Farfisa organ bursts, some spooky flute and the odd trip hop beats, Hurting Business is a real genre jumper.

Joining Prophet are local luminaries Ronny Elliot and the Nationals, an all-star band of roots artists.

Chuck Prophet performs with Ronny Elliot and the Nationals and the Pagan Saints at 8 p.m. Saturday at Skipper's Smokehouse, 910 Skipper Road, Tampa. Tickets are $9 advance, $12 at the door. (813) 977-6474 .
