New in town
Opening festivities for Centro Ybor are Oct. 5, but the parade of VIP parties and soft openings starts today.
First helpings of uptown Big City Tavern (from South Florida) and the pick-your-own no-menu place known as Dish (from points north) should be open tonight. GameWorks high-tech playroom already has Jax Grill and two bars open for business.
You can get a sneak peek at Muvico's food and flicks at a fundraiser Saturday. First screening is a $25 benefit for Hillsborough Education Foundation, starting at 6:30 p.m. Tickets at www.educationfoundation.com or (813) 231-1950.
Real parade is Oct. 5. Big Mouth hamburger stand will be open then, with Adobe Gila's, Cafe Mezzanotte soon thereafter.
In the oven
Frank Chivas (Salt Rock, Boulevard Bistro, Pep's) is retrofitting the big restaurant marooned in Clearwater harbor.
Formerly the Flagship and a Jesse's, it will have a Pacific Rim seafood theme as Island Way Grill. The "tropical sleek" look will be accompanied by a wood-fired grill and four gas-fueled woks for food from East, West and in between.
Count two first-string Buccaneers among the partners: Mike Alstott and Dave Moore.
Opening next month.
I'VE HAD ENOUGH . . .
Standing in line. At St. Petersburg's no-reservation Bonefish, the wait has gotten up to 75 minutes on weekend nights, even by the owners' count. Outback, Carrabba's and others brag on that kind of popularity, but diners may agree with Yogi Berra -- "Nobody goes there anymore; it's too crowded" -- and wish for alternatives.
