Recent releases recommended by Times film critic Steve Persall

1. Almost Famous -- Cameron Crowe's semi-autobiographical tribute to 1970s rock 'n' roll is one of the year's best films. Funny, wistful, romantic and always dead-on with its atmosphere and attitude.

2. Remember the Titans -- An integrated Virginia high school in 1971 hires a new football coach (Denzel Washington) to build a winner and color-blind character. A feel-good football movie that comes in handy after the Bucs-Jets game.

3. Nurse Betty -- Soap opera addict (Renee Zellweger) stalks her favorite actor (Greg Kinnear) while hit men (Morgan Freeman, Chris Rock) trail her. Sweet-natured and violent, all at once.

4. The Original Kings of Comedy -- Spike Lee's concert movie stars four stand-up comedians and a raucous audience. Not just a performance captured on film, but a galvanizing time for African-American pop culture.

5. Pagan Babies by Elmore Leonard -- Yes, this is a book, not a movie. But, now is not a good time of the year to look for widespread quality at theaters.
